King Of The Aquarium - The Guppy |
|
If a ‘king of the aquarium’ is mentioned these days, it’s usually in a discussion about discus. However, the regal post was held not so long ago by another fish, also very beautiful, and easily accessible to just about every aquarist – a fish that nowadays we see so often that their beauty has become commonplace. This fish is, of course, the guppy, Poecilia reticulata. By 1960 the many forms of the guppy we know now were well-established – veiltails, cofertails, flagtails, swordtails, lyretails, pintails, speartails – and in Aquarist and Pondkeeper editions (now Today’s Fishkeeper) from the 1960’s nearly every issue included something about the guppy. In an open show one (non-guppy fan) person was upset that there were as many classes for guppies as for the rest of the species combined – a view not held by others on the letters page who couldn’t get enough guppy stories and activities.

Green, spotted pufferfish — and how to tell them apart |
|
By Neale Monks
Introduction
Pufferfish are among those few types of fish that positive exude personality; where fish like guppies and tetras may be attractive and alert, they don’t really give the impression of forming any particular bond with their owners beyond seeing them as a source of food. In contrast puffers, like many of the cichlids, seem much more aware of their surroundings, and as much as you watch them, they watch you. Pufferfish also score in the cuteness stakes as well, having expressive faces with large eyes and an unusual, bird-like beak.

The Diversity of Catfishes |
|
Although many families of fish have more beautifully coloured representatives than the catfish, (at least to the eye of someone who is not already a confirmed catfish fan), few families of fish show such diversity in their body forms. There are catfish living in nearly every continent, and catfish adapted to utilise a wide variety of living conditions. |

The Giant Loricariid catfish |
|
Sooner or later every visitor to aquarium shops will encounter the suckermouth catfish, members of the Loricariidae. These fish are sold interchangeably as ‘algae eaters’ or ‘plecos’, in spite of being members of one of the largest families of fish. Loricariids range in lifestyles, temperament, and size, from the gentle inch and a half long Otocinclus affinis to the territorial giant Acanthicus.
